Through the Community Service Society RSVP Boomer+ Program we found that the motto "think big, start small" was rather fitting.  While developing our Ambassador program, which consists of volunteers conducting presentations on the benefits of RSVP membership to groups of 55+ individuals, we found that easing new volunteers into their assignments worked wonders.  At first, two staff people worked on and trained the new Ambassadors. Then it was one staff person and an AmeriCorps member and this past Fall, our newest recruits were trained by two veteran Ambassadors, who had during the past two years got to know RSVP and were ready to conduct the training themselves, as well as help with updating the training.  What are some of your programmatic successes?

After finishing a webinar on recruiting and marketing to 55+ professional and leadership volunteers, I began to wonder what the biggest challenges were for nonprofits in utilizing these types of volunteers.  For the RSVP Boomer+ Program, I would say that it's finding them enough short term projects to keep them active and energized. Our Boomer+ Program volunteers are active in outreach, evaluation, training, database coordination, interviewing prospective volunteers and strategic planning, among other things.  Would you be willing to share your biggest challenge in utilizing 55+ professional and leadership volunteers? I would love to know how the rest of the country is addressing the baby boomers, who are very different from the previous, "old school" volunteers.

The Community Service Society Retired & Senior Volunteer Program just had its first meeting of its Capacity Corps Program this morning.  Based on the lessons learned from the RSVP Boomer+ Program, Capacity Corps aims to launch 55+ volunteers who provide training and technical assistance to nonprofits on how to get ready for "Boomer type" professional and leadership leadership volunteers that can help build organizational capacity.  I would love to hear about CLIC members' provision of training and/or technical assistance to nonprofits in this arena.

There were a few requests floating around for ways to improve the usability of our office.  Plan to get a couple of fans for volunteer areas that have poor ventilation, new chairs for the interviewing areas, and maybe a new display case for our reception area.  Going to offer up and then throw out some used loose-leaf binders that are blocking a coat rack in the volunteer center.  I am definitely looking for relatively inexpensive ways to improve the customer experience in our office.  Prospective volunteers love our interviewers; now I want them to feel comfortable in our space. Just don’t tell Olga I am throwing stuff out.

In going through some notes I took at last year’s MSS meeting in Phoeniex, I found something on my thoughts on senior centers.  What I was proposing is changing the term “Senior Center” to “Center for Living” and reinvisioning them as a multiservice center for older adults.  I envision it offering health, finance, civic engagement, lifelong learning, travel, entertainment, and independent living services to its members.  I’m sure this idea isn’t new and that some senior centers already have some of the aforementioned activities, but I wanted to share it.  I think of Centers for Living as one-stop hubs providing services and/or connections to the things that the 55+ crowd finds important.
